About Alfredo Di Stéfano
Alfredo Di Stéfano is considered by many football historians to be the greatest player in history — the original total footballer who scored, created, and defended in a single match. He won five consecutive European Cups with Real Madrid (1956–1960), scoring in every final. He was FIFA's European and South American Player of the Century. Without him, Real Madrid as a global institution arguably does not exist.
Alfredo Di Stéfano's story
Buenos Aires to Madrid
Di Stéfano was born in Buenos Aires (ARG) to Italian immigrant parents. He played for River Plate before emigrating during the "El Dorado" era in Colombian football — when Colombian clubs paid South American stars outside FIFA's rules. His move to Real Madrid in 1953 was a complex saga involving both Real and Barcelona (ESP) claiming a right to him, eventually resolved in Real's favour through a sharing deal that Barcelona (ESP) ultimately walked away from.
The Five European Cups
Between 1956 and 1960, Real Madrid won five consecutive European Cups — the trophy's first five editions. Di Stéfano scored in all five finals. In the legendary 1960 final against Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) (7–3, watched by 127,000 at Hampden Park), he scored a hat-trick. These performances established Real Madrid as Europe's dominant force and created the template for what a total footballer could be.
Total Football Before the Term Existed
Di Stéfano played a style of football that was 20 years ahead of its time. He dropped deep to receive the ball, linked play between defence and attack, tracked back to win the ball, and still finished as top scorer in La Liga five times. Johan Cruyff later said Di Stéfano had influenced his conception of Total Football as much as any coach.
