About Didier Deschamps
Didier Deschamps is one of only three people in history to have won the World Cup as both player (1998) and manager (2018). He captained France to their 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship, then managed France to the 2018 World Cup title and 2016 European Championship final. As a player, he was the defensive anchor and captain of Juventus's era-defining 1990s sides.
Didier Deschamps's story
Bayonne's Captain
Deschamps was born in Bayonne in the Basque Country. He joined Nantes (FRA) as a teenager before moving to Marseille (FRA). He was never the most technically gifted player — Eric Cantona famously called him "a water carrier" — but his leadership, intelligence, and work rate made him the essential glue of every team he played in.
The 1998 World Cup
Deschamps captained France to the 1998 World Cup on home soil — a tournament built on Zidane's genius but organised around Deschamps's captaincy and Desailly's defensive solidity. His lifting of the trophy in Paris (FRA), in front of nearly a billion television viewers, is one of the defining images of French sport.
Managing France to 2018
Deschamps managed France from 2012 to 2024 — winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia and reaching the final of the 2016 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup. No other manager has reached four consecutive major tournament knockout rounds with the same country. He retired from the role in 2024 after Euro 2024.
Did you know?
- 🏆 He is one of only three people in history to have won the World Cup as both player (1998) and manager (2018) — along with Mario Zagallo (Brazil) and Franz Beckenbauer (Germany).
- 🚰 Eric Cantona called him "a water carrier" — dismissing his lack of individual flair. Deschamps responded by winning the Champions League, the World Cup, and the European Championship in the years that followed.
- 👨👩👧👦 Married Claude Deschamps; their son Dylan was born in 1996. He settled in France and became one of the few people in history to win the World Cup as both player and manager.
- 📊 He managed France to four consecutive major tournament finals or semi-finals — Euro 2016 (final), World Cup 2018 (winner), Euro 2020 (semi-final), World Cup 2022 (final) — an unprecedented run in international management.
- 👔 He retired from managing France after Euro 2024 — handing the job to his successor after 12 years, 128 games, and two World Cup titles.
- 🌟 Zinedine Zidane, who played under him both as a teammate and (briefly) a subordinate, said: "Didier Deschamps was the most important player in our France team. Not because of talent — because of character."
- 🤝 His playing partnership with Marcel Desailly at Juventus and France — Deschamps breaking up play, Desailly physical dominance, combined with Zidane's creativity — was the best defensive midfield combination in European football in the late 1990s.
- 🏟️ He was the only French player to be on the pitch for both France's World Cup victory over Brazil (1998) and France's Euro 2000 final win over Italy — the two peaks of the golden generation.
- 🦁 His leadership style — direct, demanding, unsentimental — produced a France team in 2018 that was arguably the most tactically complete of any World Cup winner since Brazil in 1970.
