About Diogo Costa
Diogo Costa is Portugal's first-choice goalkeeper and one of the most exciting young keepers in European football - a product of FC Porto who has developed into a genuine world-class option. His three saved penalties in a shootout against Slovenia made him a household name in Portugal, and his consistent club performances since have confirmed his quality.
Diogo Costa's story
Porto's Penalty King
Costa came through FC Porto's academy and established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe. His defining international moment came at UEFA Euro 2024 - he saved three consecutive penalties against Slovenia in the round of 16, one of the most extraordinary individual performances in shootout history.
Portugal's Dependable Number One
Costa's consistency, distribution and penalty-saving heroics have made him the undisputed Portugal number one. His presence in goal gives Portugal a secure foundation - knowing their keeper can save them in the biggest moments removes enormous pressure from the rest of the squad.
From Switzerland to Porto's Academy
Costa has worn Porto's famous number 99 shirt, previously belonging to club legend Vítor Baía, since 2020 - a shirt he grew up idolising long before he was good enough to wear it himself.
A Keeper Backed Early
Porto goalkeeping coach Pedro Pereira has described Costa as a calm presence who "exudes security in everything he does" - the same composure that saw him succeed Pepe as FC Porto captain in July 2024.
Family and a Record-Breaking Season
Costa extended his Porto contract to June 2030 in December 2025, tying his future to the club through the prime years of his career - a period that has also seen him become a father for the first time.
