About Emilio Butragueño
Emilio Butragueño — "El Buitre" (The Vulture) — is Real Madrid's most celebrated striker of the 1980s and one of Spain's finest footballers. He won five consecutive La Liga titles with Real Madrid (1986-1990) and scored 4 goals against Denmark at the 1986 World Cup — one of the great individual tournament performances. He represented an era of Madrid (ESP) dominance built on technical sophistication rather than individual stars.
Emilio Butragueño's story
El Buitre
Butragueño emerged through Real Madrid's Castilla reserve team and became the figurehead of the "Quinta del Buitre" — a generation of homegrown Madrid (ESP) players who dominated Spanish football in the late 1980s. His nickname "El Buitre" (The Vulture) reflected his predatory positioning in the penalty area — appearing from nowhere to convert chances others would miss.
Denmark 1986
At the 1986 World Cup, Butragueño scored 4 goals against Denmark in the round of 16 — a 5-1 Spanish victory in which he found space between the Danish defence four times. The performance is still considered one of the finest individual displays by a Spanish player at any World Cup. He finished the tournament with 5 goals, second only to Gary Lineker.
Five in a Row
Real Madrid won five consecutive La Liga titles from 1986 to 1990 with Butragueño as their leading striker — a domestic dominance that reflected the club's technical organisation rather than individual brilliance alone. He worked in partnership with Míchel, Martín Vázquez, and Sanchís — one of Spanish football's great midfield-forward combinations.
