About Hugo Sánchez
Hugo Sánchez is the finest Mexican footballer in history and one of La Liga's all-time greatest strikers. He won five consecutive La Liga top scorer awards (1985-1990) at Real Madrid — the longest such streak in the competition's history — and is the third-highest scorer in La Liga history. His spectacular bicycle kicks, overhead volleys, and acrobatic finishing made him the most visually exciting striker of the 1980s. He celebrated every goal with a forward somersault — borrowed from his sister's gymnastics training.
Hugo Sánchez's story
Somersault Goals
Sánchez grew up watching his sister compete as a gymnast. When he scored — and he scored often — he celebrated with a forward somersault. It became one of football's most recognised goal celebrations, copied by children in playground games across three continents and by several professional players. The celebration was as iconic as the goals that prompted it.
Five Pichichi Awards
From 1985 to 1990, Sánchez won five consecutive La Liga top scorer awards — the "Pichichi" — a record that has never been matched in the competition's history. In the most competitive domestic league of the era, he scored more than any other player in five consecutive seasons. His 208 La Liga goals for Real Madrid make him the third-highest scorer in the competition's history.
Mexico's Greatest
Sánchez scored 29 goals in 58 international appearances for Mexico — the national record at the time — and was the face of Mexican football during the 1986 World Cup on home soil, where Mexico reached the quarter-finals before losing to West Germany on penalties. He is to Mexican football what Pelé is to Brazil — the defining face of the national game.
