About José Luis Chilavert
José Luis Chilavert is the most extraordinary goalkeeper in football history — a man who scored 62 career goals, including 8 international goals and a hat-trick as a goalkeeper in a professional match. He was voted IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper three times (1995, 1997, 1998) and led Paraguay to their most successful World Cup campaign. He was the South American Player of the Year in 1996 and remains the only goalkeeper to score three goals in a single professional match.
José Luis Chilavert's story
The Scoring Goalkeeper
Chilavert scored 62 career goals — from free-kicks and penalties, occasionally from open play when he advanced upfield in desperate situations — across a 22-year career. No other goalkeeper in professional football history has approached this total. He scored 8 international goals, making him Paraguay's 10th-highest international scorer of all time as a goalkeeper. He scored a hat-trick for Vélez Sársfield in a single Argentine league match.
Three IFFHS Awards
Chilavert won the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award three times (1995, 1997, 1998) — the only period in which a South American goalkeeper dominated the award. He was also named South American Player of the Year in 1996 — the only goalkeeper ever to win the continental individual award — in recognition that his total contribution to Vélez Sársfield went beyond goalkeeping.
The Mouth
Chilavert was also one of football's most volcanic personalities — engaging in physical altercations, verbally attacking opponents, coaches, and referees with extraordinary frequency, and being suspended multiple times across his career. He was suspended for the entirety of Paraguay's 1998 World Cup campaign after headbutting Argentina's Roberto Sensini in a qualifier. He returned for the tournament itself and led Paraguay to the round of 16.
