About Marcelo
Marcelo Vieira is widely considered the greatest left-back in football history. In 15 years at Real Madrid he won five Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns, playing an attacking, flamboyant style that redefined what a full-back could be. Quick, technically outstanding, and with incredible energy, he set the template for the modern attacking full-back.
Marcelo's story
From Fluminense to the Bernabéu
Marcelo joined Real Madrid from Fluminense in January 2007 aged 18, reportedly after a single training session convinced the club's scouts he was special. He was so highly rated that Roberto Carlos — himself a legendary left-back — was sold within six months to make way for him.
The Greatest Left-Back
Over 15 years at Real Madrid, Marcelo became the club's most decorated player of the modern era. He won five Champions League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) — the most of any outfield player in the competition's history — along with six La Liga titles and four Club World Cups.
Return to Fluminense
After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo returned to Fluminense, the club where he started. He won the Copa Libertadores with them in 2023, completing one of the great footballing journeys.
