About Francisco Gento
Francisco Gento is the only player in history to win six European Cups — with Real Madrid from 1956 to 1966, spanning the Di Stéfano era, the Kopa era, and into the Amancio era. He was the fastest player in European football of his era and the most consistent wide player in Real Madrid's history. He played alongside Di Stéfano, Puskas, Kopa, and multiple generations of Madrid (ESP)'s most celebrated players. He died in January 2022.
Francisco Gento's story
Six
No player in football history has won the European Cup six times. Francisco Gento won it in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, and 1966. The first five were consecutive — the greatest run of European dominance by any club. The sixth came six years later, in a different Madrid (ESP) squad built around different players. Gento connected both eras. He was the only consistent member across Real Madrid's first and second European golden generations.
The Winger
Gento was described by opposition managers of the 1950s and 1960s as the fastest footballer in Europe — a left-winger whose pace was so exceptional that defenders had no tactical solution beyond fouling him. He crossed for Di Stéfano, for Puskas, for Kopa, for Amancio — giving four different generations of Madrid (ESP) forwards the service that produced their most celebrated goals. His contribution to others' statistics is incalculable.
12 La Ligas
In addition to his six European Cups, Gento won 12 La Liga titles with Real Madrid — the most by any Spanish player in the competition's history. He played 18 seasons at the club, making over 600 appearances, and retired in 1971. Real Madrid's dominance of Spanish football across the late 1950s and 1960s was built on his consistency and on the attacking quality he provided from the left flank.
