About Tim Payne

Tim Payne is a New Zealand international right-back who captained Eastern Suburbs to their first national title in 48 years before settling at Wellington Phoenix in 2019. A regular for the All Whites since 2012, he started every group game at right-back as New Zealand reached the World Cup for only the third time in the country's history. In May 2026, an Argentine content creator's campaign to promote the tournament's "least-known player" turned Payne, then followed by under 5,000 people, into one of the World Cup's most-followed footballers within weeks.

Tim Payne's story

Released, Retrialled, and a Trip to Blackburn

Payne grew up in Auckland, attending Sacred Heart College, and came through Auckland City's academy before switching to rivals Waitakere United, where he starred in their 2010 National Youth League triumph. His performances at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico, where he played every minute of New Zealand's four games, earned him a trial and then a training stint at Blackburn Rovers. Days after his 18th birthday, in January 2012, he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League club, but a work permit issue meant he was never eligible to play for the first team, and he was released when the deal expired.

Eastern Suburbs' 48-Year Wait

After his Blackburn deal fell through, Payne returned to Auckland City, spent 2015 at USL side Portland Timbers 2, then joined Eastern Suburbs, where he became captain. In March 2019 he lifted the ISPS Handa Premiership with Suburbs, a 3-0 win over Team Wellington that gave the club its first national title since 1971, ending a 48-year wait. Four months later, Wellington Phoenix signed him for the A-League, where he has been a first-team regular ever since, putting pen to paper on a new three-year contract in December 2024 that runs to the end of the 2027-28 season.

New Zealand's Rare Return

New Zealand had not reached a World Cup since 2010, missing out three further times by losing inter-confederation play-offs to Mexico, Peru and Costa Rica. In September 2025 the All Whites finally broke that run, beating New Caledonia 3-0 in the OFC qualifying final to seal an automatic spot at the 2026 finals, only New Zealand's third World Cup appearance in their history. Payne, by then one of the squad's most experienced players, started all three group games at right-back: a 2-2 draw with Iran, a 1-3 defeat to Egypt in which his corner set up Finn Surman's opening goal, and a 1-5 loss to Belgium, as New Zealand finished bottom of Group G.

The Most Famous Unknown Player at the World Cup

The Scarsini episode turned New Zealand football's quietest senior professional into its most famous face, more or less overnight — a transformation Payne has handled with cheerful bewilderment.

From Viral Fame to a Bigger Platform

The attention peaked in ways only football's internet age could produce, and Payne has since turned it toward something more lasting.
