Achraf Hakimi's story
Getafe Beginnings
Born in Madrid on 4 November 1998 to Moroccan parents, Hakimi grew up in Getafe, south of the city. "My mother cleaned houses. My father was a street vendor," he has said, and paying for his football was their sacrifice. He started at local club Colonia Ofigevi before Real Madrid's academy signed him in 2006.
Choosing Morocco
Although born and raised in Spain, he chose Morocco, saying he grew up with Arab and Muslim culture at home. He captained them at the 2026 World Cup and, against the Netherlands on 29 June 2026, became only the second Moroccan after Noureddine Naybet to win 100 caps.
Madrid, Dortmund, Milan
He was part of Real Madrid's Champions League-winning squad in 2017-18, then spent two seasons on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Inter signed him in 2020 and he won Serie A in his only season there, before PSG paid a reported €60m in July 2021.
The Panenka Against Spain
At the 2022 World Cup he chipped the winning penalty in the last-16 shoot-out against Spain, the country of his birth, as Morocco became the first African side to reach a semi-final. After the group win over Belgium he had run to the stands to kiss his mother, Saida, and give her his shirt.
Europe's Best, Africa's Best
He opened the scoring as PSG beat Inter 5-0 in the 2025 Champions League final, the first Moroccan to score in one. He finished sixth in the 2025 Ballon d'Or, a best for a Moroccan, and was named African Footballer of the Year.
