About Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga is the Swedish winger who emerged from Manchester United's youth system to become one of the Premier League's most electrifying attackers. The son of Cameroonian World Cup defender Joseph Elanga, he developed from raw academy prospect into a Champions League scorer at Newcastle United and a match-winner on the international stage for Sweden.

Anthony Elanga's story

Roots in Malmö, Home in Manchester

Anthony Elanga was raised in Malmö by two footballing parents — father Joseph, a professional defender, and mother Daniella, who played for the Cameroon women's team. Sport was in the family's DNA from the start, but it was the decision to leave Sweden for England when Anthony was 12 that set everything in motion. The family settled in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, where Anthony made an immediate impression at the local club before earning a place in Manchester United's famed academy. Scouts who watched him play described a winger with an X-factor rarely seen at his age.

The Ronaldo Effect at Old Trafford

Elanga won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at Manchester United in 2020 and made his competitive debut in 2021. He became a regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and scored a famous Champions League equaliser against Atlético Madrid in February 2022. But training alongside Cristiano Ronaldo shaped his professionalism most deeply. "I learned a lot from him, on and off the pitch," Elanga said in June 2026 — citing Ronaldo's recovery discipline and his daily habits. Bruno Fernandes also mentored him from his first days in the senior squad.

Nottingham Forest and the Breakthrough

Sold to Nottingham Forest in July 2023 for £15m, Elanga finally got the consistent game time his talent demanded. He delivered: 11 goals in 82 appearances across two seasons, including the winner against former club Manchester United in April 2025. His directness and pace became a defining feature of Forest's attack. Back-to-back Premier League campaigns proved he could perform at the highest level when trusted week in, week out — and earned him a move to one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Newcastle, Barcelona and the Community

A £55m arrival at Newcastle United in July 2025 put Elanga in elite company. He repaid the investment on the biggest stage, delivering crucial Champions League goals in 2025-26 that lit up Tyneside. The North East community quickly became part of who he is: he joined the Foundation's outreach efforts as a regular volunteer, helping at food pantry sessions, meeting young people through school programmes, and championing an anti-racism message — work that earned him recognition from the PFA.

Sweden's World Cup Hero

Elanga grew up in Sweden and committed to representing his birthplace internationally, declining interest from Cameroon where his parents were born. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against Poland, he scored the opening goal in a 3-2 win, with Viktor Gyökeres's late winner sending Sweden back to the World Cup after eight years away. In the World Cup itself he scored twice in the group stage, producing decisive contributions as Sweden advanced. With 34 senior caps and 8 international goals, he is already one of his nation's most important forwards — and still only 24.
