Peter Beardsley
Second Striker / Attacking Midfielder · Newcastle United · England
About Peter Beardsley
Peter Beardsley is widely regarded as one of the most gifted players England has produced — a creative second striker whose link-up play and close control made him the ideal partner for more physical forwards. He formed legendary partnerships with Gary Lineker (England) and John Barnes (Liverpool (ENG)) and was central to England's 1986 and 1990 World Cup runs. Bobby Robson called him the most naturally talented player he ever managed.
Peter Beardsley's story
Longbenton's Artisan
Beardsley was born in Longbenton, Newcastle (ENG), and began his career at Carlisle. He failed a trial at Manchester United under Ron Atkinson — a fact Ferguson later cited as one of his predecessor's biggest errors. He tried his luck in North America before Newcastle (ENG) signed him and he became one of the most creative players in British football.
Liverpool's Creative Force
Kenny Dalglish signed Beardsley for £1.9m in 1987 — a British record — and immediately built the attack around his link play. Beardsley's combination with John Barnes and John Aldridge produced one of the finest attacking units in English football history. His dribbling in tight spaces and ability to create for teammates made him as important as any goalscorer.
England's Second Man
With England, Beardsley consistently operated as Gary Lineker's partner — creating for the more physical striker while contributing goals of his own. At the 1986 World Cup he played alongside Lineker in a partnership that proved England's most productive pairing at a major tournament for a generation.
