About David Beckham OBE
David Beckham OBE is the most recognisable footballer of his generation — a global icon defined by pinpoint crossing, metronomic free-kicks and an unmatched public profile. He was the first English player to win league titles in four countries, and captained England from 2000 to 2006.
David Beckham OBE's story
Leytonstone Boy
David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on 2 May 1975 in Leytonstone, east London (ENG), the son of hairdresser Sandra and kitchen fitter Ted. The family were devoted Manchester United fans, and young David was obsessed with football from the moment he could walk. He practised endlessly in the local park, and at 11 won a skills competition run by Bobby Charlton (ENG)'s Soccer Schools — his prize was a two-week trial at Barcelona (ESP). He signed as a Manchester United apprentice at 14, turning down Chelsea to follow his dream.
Manchester United
Beckham debuted for United in 1992 and never looked back. His defining moment came in August 1996 when, spotting goalkeeper Neil Sullivan off his line, he chipped the ball from the halfway line into the net against Wimbledon. The goal made him a household name overnight. He was central to the 1998–99 treble — United's most extraordinary season — and his perfectly delivered corner in the dying seconds of the Champions League Final led to two goals and an immortal comeback against Bayern Munich (GER).
Victoria & Fame
In 1997, Beckham began dating Victoria Adams — Posh Spice of the Spice Girls — at a charity event. Their relationship immediately became one of the most scrutinised in Britain. They married in July 1999 at Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland, in matching purple thrones. The tabloids dubbed them "Posh and Becks." Together they have four children: Brooklyn (1999), Romeo (2002), Cruz (2005), and Harper (2011). Despite the relentless media spotlight, the couple have maintained a famously solid marriage of over 25 years.
The Man Behind the Brand
Away from football, Beckham is known for his meticulous appearance — he has over 60 tattoos, most dedicated to Victoria or his children. Friends describe a surprisingly quiet, family-centred man beneath the global celebrity. He is well-documented to have OCD tendencies, arranging hotel rooms, drinks and objects in perfect symmetrical pairs before he can relax. He is a devoted father and has spoken openly about the anxiety that came with fame arriving so young.
Real Madrid, America & Retirement
After joining Real Madrid's Galácticos in 2003 he moved to LA Galaxy in 2007, transforming the profile of football in the United States. He retired from playing at Paris (FRA) Saint-Germain in 2013, having won league titles in England, Spain, the USA and France — the first player in history to do so.
Life After Football
Beckham co-founded Inter Miami CF, which entered MLS in 2020 and became global news in 2023 when Lionel Messi joined. He holds an OBE, is a long-standing UNICEF ambassador, and his charitable work spans children's hospitals and disaster relief. His eldest son Brooklyn is now a photographer and chef, married to actress Nicola Peltz.
