About Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel is widely regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in Manchester United history and the best goalkeeper of his era. Signed for just £550,000 in 1991, he won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and the iconic 1999 Champions League before leaving on a high. At Euro 1992, his performances were central to Denmark's shock tournament victory.

Peter Schmeichel's story

The Great Dane

Schmeichel grew up in Gladsaxe, Denmark, and joined Brøndby where he became the best goalkeeper in Scandinavia. Alex Ferguson signed him for the bargain price of £550,000 in 1991 — often cited as United's best-ever piece of transfer business. His combination of size, reflexes, and voice gave United a goalkeeper who dominated not just his box but his entire defence.

Euro 1992

Denmark had not qualified for Euro 1992 — they were invited as a late replacement for Yugoslavia, who were barred due to the Balkans War. Schmeichel's performances were central to one of the greatest shocks in tournament history, as Denmark beat Germany in the final. He was named the tournament's best goalkeeper.

1999 and the Treble

Schmeichel captained Manchester United to the 1999 Champions League final — with Roy Keane and Paul Scholes suspended — and lifted the trophy after United's extraordinary 2–1 comeback from 1–0 down in injury time against Bayern Munich (GER). He had announced before the season that he would leave. That night in Barcelona (ESP) was the perfect farewell.
