About Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy was the most clinically lethal penalty box striker of his generation. With Manchester United he scored 150 goals in 219 games — including a record 10 consecutive Premier League scoring games. Relentless, single-minded, and almost robotic in front of goal.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's story
The Knee That Changed History
PSV agreed a £19m deal to sell van Nistelrooy to Manchester United in April 2000. Then he ruptured his cruciate ligament in training. He spent a year in rehabilitation. In his first United season he scored 36 goals — the most by a debutant in the club's history.
Old Trafford's Machine
For five years he was simply the most reliable goal-scorer in Europe. In 2002–03 he scored in eight consecutive Champions League games. He set the record for most consecutive Premier League matches scored in (10). His relationship with the Old Trafford crowd was intense.
Coaching Career
After retiring in 2012, van Nistelrooy moved into coaching through PSV's academy and eventually became head coach, winning the Eredivisie title in 2023–24 before taking the Manchester United caretaker role in late 2024.
