About Bebeto
Bebeto is one of Brazil's greatest strikers and a World Cup winner in 1994 — where his partnership with Romário was considered the finest attacking duo in any single World Cup tournament. His goal celebration — the "baby rocking" gesture — became the most iconic celebration of the 1990s after he scored against the Netherlands and celebrated the birth of his son Matteus.
Bebeto's story
Vitória's Elegant Striker
Bebeto was born in Vitória, Espírito Santo, and came through Flamengo's academy. He was a technically refined striker — not the physical presence of Romário, but an elegant, quick, intelligent forward whose movement created space for teammates. His goal record of 399 career goals reflects consistency maintained over nearly two decades.
The Baby Celebration
In Brazil's 1994 World Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands, Bebeto scored and then rocked his arms as if cradling a baby — celebrating the birth of his son Matteus, born three days earlier. Romário and Mazinho joined in. It became the tournament's defining image — and one of the most replicated goal celebrations in football history.
The Romário Partnership
Bebeto and Romário at the 1994 World Cup are considered the finest striking partnership in any World Cup tournament since Pelé and Tostão in 1970. They combined pace, movement, technical quality, and finishing in perfect complement. Brazil won the tournament without conceding in open play in the knockout stages.
