About Grzegorz Lato
Grzegorz Lato is Poland's greatest footballer alongside Zbigniew Boniek — the Golden Boot winner at the 1974 World Cup with 7 goals, helping Poland achieve their finest World Cup result (3rd place). He appeared at three World Cups (1974, 1978, 1982) and scored 45 goals in 100 international appearances. His partnership with Kazimierz Deyna and Andrzej Szarmach at the 1974 World Cup produced one of the finest international attacking trios of the 1970s.
Grzegorz Lato's story
1974
The 1974 World Cup in West Germany produced one of the finest Polish performances in tournament history — Lato's 7 goals winning the Golden Boot, Poland beating Argentina, Brazil, and finishing third. They only lost to West Germany (the eventual winners) 1-0 in the semi-final. Lato's partnership with Kazimierz Deyna — Deyna creating, Lato finishing on the right — gave the team a directness that no opponent at the tournament had the pace to handle.
Three World Cups
Lato appeared at three World Cups — 1974, 1978, and 1982 — finishing third in both 1974 and 1982, the only player to achieve this feat. At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Lato was 32 and Boniek was the tournament's star. But Lato's contribution — 4 goals — confirmed that his quality had sustained across a decade of international football at the highest level.
The Olympic Gold
Poland won the Olympic football gold medal in 1972 in Munich (GER) — Lato's first major international achievement — which established the squad that would go on to finish third at the 1974 World Cup. The 1972 gold remains Poland's only Olympic football gold medal, and Lato's contribution to both achievements established him as the finest Polish right-winger in international football history.
