About Hernán Crespo
Hernán Crespo is one of the most decorated South American strikers of the Premier League era — a player who scored at the highest level in Argentina, Italy, and England. He scored 35 goals in 64 international appearances for Argentina and was a serial Champions League finalist (losing with Monaco (MON) in 2004, winning with Inter in 2010). His brace in the 2005 Champions League final — only for Chelsea to lose in extra time — is one of the most famous individual final performances.
Hernán Crespo's story
Buenos Aires to Europe
Crespo was born in Florida, Buenos Aires (ARG), and came through River Plate's academy. He moved to Parma (ITA) in 1996 and became one of Serie A's finest strikers — winning the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia. His move to Lazio, then Chelsea, then loan to Milan (ITA) reflected a career of consistent excellence at the highest level across different leagues and tactical systems.
Istanbul 2005
In the 2005 Champions League Final against Liverpool (ENG), Crespo scored twice in the second half to put Chelsea 3-0 ahead — before Liverpool (ENG)'s extraordinary comeback from 3-0 down to level, and eventual penalty win. His goals were technically superb; the result was football's cruelest. He had done everything asked of him and still ended the night on the losing side.
The Record
Crespo scored 35 goals in 64 international appearances for Argentina — one of the finest ratios in the national team's history. He represented a generation of Argentine strikers who competed at the highest level in Europe for over a decade, winning trophies across multiple countries.
