About Giacinto Facchetti
Giacinto Facchetti is the player who invented the modern attacking full-back — a tall, athletic left-back at Inter Milan who made 59 international appearances for Italy, appeared in the World Cup final in 1970, and scored 75 goals from a defensive position in the era when full-backs never scored. His attacking runs down the left flank redefined what was possible for defenders. Inter Milan's president after his retirement, he died in 2006 from brain cancer.
Giacinto Facchetti's story
The Invention
Before Giacinto Facchetti, full-backs did not attack. Their role was simple: defend the flank, prevent crosses, clear the ball. Facchetti was the first to systematically push forward — overlapping the winger, receiving the ball in advanced positions, crossing, and occasionally shooting. He scored 75 goals from left-back across 18 seasons. The role of the attacking full-back — now standard in modern football — was created by Facchetti's example at Inter Milan in the 1960s.
Grande Inter
Facchetti was the left-back of Helenio Herrera's Grande Inter — the Inter Milan squad that won two European Cups (1964, 1965) and three Serie A titles. The catenaccio defensive system that Herrera perfected required a libero behind the defensive line and full-backs who were athletic and intelligent. Facchetti's attacking quality gave the system a dimension that opponents could not account for — a defender who created goals.
Inter Forever
Facchetti spent his entire 18-year professional career at Inter Milan — making 634 appearances and becoming the club's captain and emblematic figure. After retiring in 1978, he became a club director and eventually Inter's president — spending over 40 years at the same institution as player and administrator. He died in September 2006 from brain cancer, aged 64. Inter retired his number 3 shirt.
