About Roberto Baggio
Roberto Baggio — Il Divin Codino, "The Divine Ponytail" — is Italy's greatest ever player. A Ballon d'Or winner in 1993, he carried Italy almost single-handedly to the 1994 World Cup final, scoring five goals in the knockout rounds. His missed penalty in the shootout against Brazil is football's most iconic heartbreak — yet his legacy is defined by everything that came before that kick.
Roberto Baggio's story
Caldogno to the World
Roberto Baggio grew up in a large Catholic family in Caldogno near Vicenza. He converted to Buddhism at 22 — baffling Italian football at the time — but credits it with giving him the mental strength to endure injury setbacks and public heartbreak. He was Italy's most coveted teenager when Fiorentina signed him in 1985.
The Divine Ponytail
His famous ponytail became a symbol of artistic football. At Juventus he reached his peak — Serie A's top scorer, Ballon d'Or winner, UEFA Cup glory. His 1994 World Cup — five goals in five knockout games, carrying a mediocre Italy to the final — is one of the great individual tournament performances in history.
The Missed Penalty
When Baggio stepped up last in the 1994 World Cup final shootout against Brazil, Italy needed him to score. He blazed it over the bar. He later said: "That penalty will follow me to the grave. But the night before, I had a dream I scored it."
