About Paolo Maldini
Paolo Maldini is the greatest defender in the history of football and the definitive one-club man. He spent 25 years in AC Milan's first team — 902 appearances, 7 Serie A titles, 5 UEFA Champions League trophies. He played his final match aged 40 with the same elegance and authority as his debut at 16.
Paolo Maldini's story
The Maldini Dynasty
Paolo's father Cesare was also an AC Milan legend and Italy manager — one of football's rare dynasties. Paolo joined Milan (ITA)'s youth academy at nine. He made his Serie A debut at 16 and never played for another club. His son Daniel later played for Milan (ITA) too, making them a three-generation football family.
The Perfect Defender
What separated Maldini from all others was his almost never having to tackle. His positional sense was so advanced he could read the game three moves ahead and cut off danger before it materialised. Arrigo Sacchi said: "Paolo did not correct mistakes. He prevented them happening."
Longevity and Legacy
He retired aged 40 in 2009, captaining Milan (ITA)'s last Serie A title for many years in his final season. He returned as Technical Director in 2018, helping rebuild the squad that won the Serie A title in 2022.
