About Marco van Basten
Marco van Basten is the greatest pure striker in football history. Three Ballon d'Or awards, three European Golden Boots, and a goal in the Euro 1988 final — a volley from an impossible angle against the USSR — that is universally cited as the best ever scored. A career tragically cut short by ankle injury at just 28.
Marco van Basten's story
Utrecht to Amsterdam
Van Basten grew up in Utrecht and was identified as exceptional from his earliest youth games. He joined Ajax and scored 152 goals in 172 Eredivisie games — a ratio that earned him a move to Milan (ITA). His combination with Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard at both club and international level was the golden triangle of late-80s football.
The Volley That Defied Physics
In the Euro 1988 final against the USSR, van Basten received a cross from the right side — almost at the byline, the ball at an impossible height and angle. He controlled it and volleyed into the top-left corner from 15 yards. Goalkeepers and coaches have spent 35 years trying to explain how the technique was even physically possible.
Ankle, Retirement, Regret
A persistent ankle problem became catastrophic in 1992. His final competitive game was in May 1993. He attempted comebacks repeatedly but retired definitively in 1995, aged 28. He later said: "Football was my life. Without it I had to find a new reason to wake up in the morning."
