About Franco Baresi

Franco Baresi is the greatest defender in AC Milan's history and one of the greatest players to have never received a Ballon d'Or. He played his entire career at AC Milan (excluding one loan), winning six Serie A titles, three European Cups/Champions Leagues, and making 532 appearances. He captained the most dominant club side of the late 1980s and early 1990s, known as "Sacchi's Milan (ITA)." AC Milan retired his number 6 shirt upon his retirement.

Franco Baresi's story

Travagliato's Captain

Baresi grew up in Travagliato in Lombardy. His older brother Giuseppe also played for AC Milan, giving Franco an early connection to the club. He joined Milan (ITA)'s academy at 14 and made his first-team debut at 17. He spent 20 years as a first-team player — loyalty of a kind almost unimaginable in the modern era.

Sacchi's Milan

Under manager Arrigo Sacchi (1987–1991), AC Milan became one of the greatest club sides ever assembled. Baresi was the fulcrum of a defensive system of extraordinary sophistication — organising an offside trap, stepping out to cut lines, and marshalling teammates with a precision that made Milan (ITA)'s back line seem almost unbeatable. In the 1988-89 European Cup, Milan (ITA) did not concede in the knockout rounds.

The 1994 World Cup Final

Baresi had knee surgery six weeks before the 1994 World Cup final. He returned for the final against Brazil, played an extraordinary game, and then — in the penalty shootout — missed his penalty, which Italy went on to lose. The image of Baresi missing the penalty is one of football's most painful moments: a great career's most painful ending.
