About Andriy Shevchenko
Andriy Shevchenko is the greatest Ukrainian footballer in history and the 2004 Ballon d'Or winner. He scored 175 goals in 296 appearances for AC Milan and won the 2003 Champions League. His £30m move to Chelsea in 2006 — one of the most expensive transfers of the era — did not work out as planned, but his legacy at Milan (ITA) remains one of European football's greatest striking careers.
Andriy Shevchenko's story
Dvirkivshchyna to Dynamo
Shevchenko was born in a small village in the Kyiv (UKR) Oblast and joined Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)'s academy. He won four league titles before Carlo Ancelotti signed him for AC Milan in 1999. His pace, power, and clinical finishing immediately made him one of Europe's most feared strikers.
AC Milan
Shevchenko's years at AC Milan were the peak of his career. He scored 175 goals in 296 games — a ratio exceptional for a striker in the defensive Italian league — and won the 2003 Champions League, scoring the winning penalty in the shootout against Juventus. His 2004 Ballon d'Or rewarded a sustained period of European dominance.
Chelsea and Return
His £30m move to Chelsea in 2006 — arranged personally by Roman Abramovich — was one of football's highest-profile disappointments. He scored 22 goals in two seasons — a decent record, but not the transformation either club had hoped for. He returned to Milan (ITA) and then Dynamo before retiring in 2012. He later managed Ukraine's national team.
