About João Félix
João Félix arrived at Atlético Madrid as a €126m teenager — the fourth most expensive transfer in history — heralded as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo. Blessed with exceptional technical skill, vision and the ability to score spectacular goals, he has had a turbulent club career but established himself as one of Portugal's most exciting players.
João Félix's story
The Benfica Prodigy
João Félix emerged at Benfica aged 19 with a series of extraordinary performances that announced him to the world. In 2018-19 he scored 20 goals and provided 11 assists, winning the Golden Boy award and attracting interest from every major club in Europe.
The €126m Move
Atlético Madrid signed him in June 2019 for €126m — the fourth largest transfer fee in history. The weight of expectation was enormous. While he showed brilliance in flashes, the pragmatic style demanded by Diego Simeone restricted his ability to express himself freely, leading to a fractious relationship with the club.
Loan Spells and Chelsea
Loan spells at Chelsea (2023) and Barcelona (2023-24) showed his quality in more expressive systems. He joined Chelsea permanently in 2024 and has continued to demonstrate the exceptional talent that made him one of Europe's most expensive teenagers.
