About Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres — "El Niño" — was one of the most exciting strikers in Europe at his peak at Liverpool (ENG) (2007-2011), scoring 81 goals in 142 games. He scored the winning goal in the Euro 2008 final against Germany. His £50m move to Chelsea was one of football's most high-profile transfers, but his form at Stamford Bridge never matched Liverpool (ENG)'s heights. He won the Champions League (2012) and Europa League (2013) at Chelsea.
Fernando Torres's story
Fuenlabrada's Son
Torres was born in Fuenlabrada, a suburb of Madrid (ESP), and joined Atlético Madrid's academy aged 11. He made his first-team debut at 17 and was quickly captaining the side. His five seasons at Atlético were promising but trophy-less. Liverpool (ENG) signed him in 2007 for £20m.
Liverpool
Torres's four years at Liverpool (ENG) were among the most exciting by a striker in Premier League history. 81 goals in 142 games — while leading a Liverpool (ENG) team that otherwise lacked the quality to win trophies — made him the best striker in England for two consecutive seasons. His partnership with Steven Gerrard was one of the most dynamic in the league's history.
Chelsea and the Fade
His £50m move to Chelsea in January 2011 was the most expensive transfer in British football history at the time. He scored 45 goals in three seasons — a decent return, but not the transformation Chelsea had anticipated. His form recovered slightly after returning to Atlético and later playing in Japan. He retired in 2019.
