About Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne is widely considered the finest midfielder in the world during the late 2010s and early 2020s, renowned for his vision and range of passing. He was the creative engine of a dominant Manchester City side under Pep Guardiola for nine years, collecting a Champions League medal among his major honours, before joining Napoli in the summer of 2025.
Kevin De Bruyne's story
Ghent's Architect
De Bruyne was born in Ghent and joined Genk's academy. Chelsea signed him in 2012 but barely used him — a decision Guardiola later called "the most extraordinary transfer mistake in modern football." He moved to Wolfsburg, won the DFB-Pokal, and became one of the Bundesliga's finest players before City paid €76m.
The Assist Record
In the 2019-20 Premier League season, De Bruyne set the single-season assists record with 20 — surpassing Thierry Henry's record of 20 (Henry achieved it across a longer counting period). His combination of weight, timing, and selection — knowing when to cross, when to square, when to play the through ball — makes his assist numbers the most technically sophisticated in English football history.
The 2023 Treble
Manchester City's 2022-23 treble — Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League — was built around De Bruyne's creative foundation. He was Player of the Match in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. In the same season he suffered facial fractures and eye socket damage in the final; he played through them to complete the game.
A Foster Family's Rejection
At 15, while boarding with a foster family during his time in Genk's academy, De Bruyne was told over the summer break that they would not take him back - they found him "too quiet" and "difficult". He has since described the rejection as a turning point that hardened his resolve to succeed. Coaches Jan Troos and Charly Musonda at Gent had earlier shaped his technique from childhood; De Bruyne credits their individual coaching with his development.
