About Nicolas Jackson
Nicolas Jackson is a self-taught striker who never played organised youth football, rising from sand pitches in Senegal's Casamance region to a starring role at Villarreal and Chelsea before a big-money move to Aston Villa in 2026.
Nicolas Jackson's story
Self-Taught on the Sand Pitches of Casamance
Jackson grew up between The Gambia and Ziguinchor in Senegal's Casamance region, playing street football on sand with stones for goalposts. “I never played in a youth team,” he has said — “it helped me a lot and gave me a lot of freedom” (FC Bayern Munich interview, 1 September 2025).
Sadio Máné's Advice Before Chelsea
Before completing his 2023 move to Chelsea, Jackson leaned on fellow Senegalese forward Sadio Mané for advice. “I spoke with Sadio Mané about him and he said very good things about him… Sadio told me the manager would help me improve and succeed if I listened,” Jackson said (Goal.fr, 1 July 2023).
An Open Mind, Under Maresca
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised Jackson's application and pressing intensity during his first full season at Stamford Bridge (Chelsea FC, 30 November 2024), while also flagging his finishing as an area to sharpen — a similar mix of praise and specific ask to the one Unai Emery would later strike at Villa.
A New Chapter, Under an Old Mentor
After a loan season at Bayern Munich in 2025-26, Jackson completed a permanent move to Aston Villa for a reported £65m in August 2026, reuniting with Unai Emery — the coach he first worked under at Villarreal and credits with teaching him “everything about football.” He made his Villa debut on 31 August 2026 against Arsenal.
