About Yoane Wissa
Yoane Wissa is the DR Congo international who became one of Brentford (ENG)'s most dangerous attacking weapons in the Premier League before a £50 million-plus move to Newcastle United in September 2025. A winger with genuine end-product, Wissa has been consistently underestimated yet consistently delivers goals and assists at the top level.
Yoane Wissa's story
The DR Congo Flier
Born in Épinay-sous-Sénart near Paris to Congolese parents, Wissa rose through the French game at Châteauroux and Lorient before signing for Brentford (ENG) for a reported £8.5 million in August 2021, beginning a four-year rise in the Premier League.
Brentford's Talisman
At Brentford (ENG), close weekly coaching sessions with head coach Thomas Frank reshaped his all-round game. Alongside Bryan Mbeumo he formed a lethal front two, and his goal against Manchester City in January 2025 made him the club's record Premier League scorer, capping a 20-goal season.
A Deadline-Day Move to Newcastle
Wissa completed a transfer worth £50 million-plus to Newcastle United with seconds of the 1 September 2025 deadline remaining, driving through the night from London for his medical. A knee injury delayed his debut to 6 December 2025, when he became the 1,000th player to appear for Newcastle in the league.
History for the Leopards
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Wissa scored DR Congo's first-ever finals goal in a 1-1 draw with Portugal, then struck twice to beat Uzbekistan and send the Leopards into the knockout stage for the first time in their history. DR Congo lost 2-1 to England in the last 32, Wissa hitting the post and a late free-kick narrowly over.
A Newcastle Reset
Newcastle appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach in August 2026 after Eddie Howe's near five-year spell ended. It capped an injury-hit first season on Tyneside for Wissa, who managed just one Premier League goal in nineteen appearances after his delayed debut.
Did you know?
- ⚡ Wissa's sprint speed is among the fastest recorded in the Premier League — his ability to run in behind and in transition makes him particularly dangerous against high defensive lines.
- 🇨🇩 He chose to represent DR Congo internationally rather than France — becoming a key figure in the Leopards' attacking play and one of African football's best-known wingers.
- 👨👩👧👦 Married with children, Wissa settled in London (ENG) during his four years at Brentford (ENG), before relocating north after his 2025 move to Newcastle United.
- 🔄 Under Thomas Frank he operated as both a left winger and a second striker — his versatility and movement made him difficult to track and defend against.
- 💰 Signed for just £8.5 million from Lorient, Wissa became worth many times that — a typical Brentford (ENG) success story of identifying value and developing talent effectively.
- 🎉 His trademark 'Fimbu' celebration - arms miming a whip crack, inspired by a Congolese song by Félix Wazekwa - is his way of 'carrying where I come from with me onto the pitch'; he performed it after DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal, against Portugal.
- 🧘 His early Brentford celebration - sitting cross-legged on the pitch in a yoga-inspired pose - began after a stoppage-time equaliser against Liverpool in September 2021: "My celebration is about being focused every time, staying calm and keep working," he explained.
- 🚀 As a boy he dreamed of a very different career: ‘My dream was to be an astronaut,’ he told French outlet Le Télégramme in 2018.
- 🎓 In September 2025 he graduated from the PFA Business School with a postgraduate diploma in Global Football Business Management, accredited by the University of Portsmouth.
