About Alexis Mac Allister
Alexis Mac Allister is Argentina's World Cup winner who became one of the Premier League's most dynamic midfielders — first at Brighton (ENG), where he was central to their most successful period, and then at Liverpool (ENG) under Jürgen Klopp. His combination of pressing intensity, technical quality and late runs into the box make him a complete modern midfielder.
Alexis Mac Allister's story
World Cup Winner
Mac Allister comes from an Argentine football family — his father Carlos and brothers Kevin and Francis all played professionally too. He made his senior debut for Argentinos Juniors in October 2016, and signed for Brighton in January 2019, but a delay in his UK work permit kept him in Argentina on loan for a further season — first back at Argentinos Juniors, then at Boca Juniors, where he won the 2019-20 Argentine Primera División title before finally arriving in England. At Brighton he became a central figure under Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi. At the 2022 World Cup he was outstanding for Argentina, winning the tournament and establishing his claim as one of the world's best midfielders.
Liverpool's Midfield Engine
At Liverpool, Mac Allister slotted seamlessly into Klopp's high-energy system. His pressing, technical quality and football intelligence made him an ideal fit for Liverpool's style — and his performances in the 2024-25 season, when Liverpool won the Premier League, were a central part of their success. He is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Off the Pitch
Teammates describe Mac Allister as humble and team-first, someone more interested in setting up a goal than scoring one — but he carries real authority too: Virgil van Dijk has singled out his calming influence in Liverpool's midfield, an unusual mix of good cheer and genuine leadership. He's also one of the dressing room's great wind-up merchants, handing Kostas Tsimikas the nickname "the most annoying guy in the world" and Diogo Jota "the chubby one" — both fondly meant — while his own Liverpool teammates christened him "Super Mario" in return, and used to tease him that Jürgen Klopp was like a second father to him. He also contributes personal essays to The Players' Tribune, writing about winning the World Cup and his development under Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton — and, most movingly, about the sudden death of his close friend and Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota in a car accident in July 2025, describing their friendship as "a genuine brotherhood, which is very rare in football."

- 🧉 Rarely seen without his mate — the traditional Argentine tea has become something of a signature habit, and he's been trying (with mixed success) to get his Liverpool teammates hooked too. Away from the pitch he also plays Pokémon on an old Game Boy and keeps a personal diary.
- 👨👩👧 Partner Ailén Cova is a childhood friend from Santa Rosa, La Pampa; the couple welcomed their daughter, Alaia, in September 2025, and have settled in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
