About Sir Kenny Dalglish
Kenny Dalglish — "King Kenny" — is the greatest footballer Scotland has ever produced and one of the most successful player-managers in British football history. He won three European Cups, four League Championships, and the FA Cup with Liverpool (ENG) as a player, and then managed the club to further League and Cup success. He is the only player to have scored 100 goals in both the Scottish and English top leagues.
Sir Kenny Dalglish's story
Glasgow's Gift to Football
Dalglish was born in the Dalmarnock area of Glasgow (SCO) and joined Celtic as a teenager. He spent eight years at Celtic Park winning four league titles and made a record-breaking £440,000 move to Liverpool (ENG) in 1977 — signed by Bob Paisley to replace Kevin Keegan. He immediately became the most important player in English football.
Hillsborough and Humanity
When the Hillsborough disaster occurred on 15 April 1989 — 96 Liverpool (ENG) fans died in a crowd crush at an FA Cup semi-final — Dalglish was Liverpool (ENG)'s manager. He attended funerals of victims, opened his home to bereaved families, and supported survivors for decades. His response to Hillsborough — and his unwavering support for the campaign for justice — defined his character as much as his football.
Player-Manager Legacy
Dalglish became player-manager of Liverpool (ENG) in 1985 — playing and managing simultaneously — and won a League and FA Cup double in his first season. He managed Blackburn Rovers to the 1994-95 Premier League title — one of only two clubs outside the "Big Six" to win the Premier League era title.
