About Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard is Liverpool (ENG)'s greatest ever player and one of English football's most iconic figures. He spent 17 years at Anfield, winning the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup and a miraculous Champions League comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul (TUR) in 2005. He is the only player to have scored in an FA Cup final, League Cup final, UEFA Cup final and Champions League final.
Steven Gerrard's story
Whiston's Finest
Gerrard grew up in Huyton on Merseyside, a stone's throw from Anfield. He joined Liverpool (ENG)'s academy at age nine and never left. Chelsea famously made two bids — one of £32m in 2005, another in 2011 — and he turned both down. "I'm a Liverpool (ENG) player," he told José Mourinho. "I always will be."
Istanbul and the Miracle
In the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan, Liverpool (ENG) were 3–0 down at half-time. Gerrard led the comeback himself — heading a goal to make it 3–1, then driving his team forward. Liverpool (ENG) levelled and won on penalties. It is the greatest comeback in Champions League history. Gerrard later said he contemplated substituting himself at half-time, he was so ashamed.
The Slip and Legacy
In the 2013–14 season, Liverpool (ENG) came within two games of their first league title in 24 years. Gerrard slipped on the ball at Anfield, gifting a goal to Chelsea, and the title slipped away. He retired in 2015, managed Rangers to their first Scottish title in 10 years in 2021, then moved to Aston Villa and Saudi Arabia.
