About Graeme Souness
Graeme Souness is the most complete Scottish footballer of the 1980s and the driving force behind Liverpool (ENG)'s era of European and domestic dominance. He won three European Cups, five First Division titles, and four League Cups at Anfield — the most decorated midfielder in Liverpool (ENG)'s history. He combined physical power with technical quality in a way that made him the definitive English First Division midfielder of his era.
Graeme Souness's story
Edinburgh's Enforcer
Souness was born in Edinburgh (SCO) and joined Middlesbrough (ENG) before Bob Paisley signed him for Liverpool (ENG) in 1978 for £350,000. He immediately became the heartbeat of the most successful English club side of the era — combining technical quality with physical authority in a way that established Liverpool (ENG)'s midfield dominance across six seasons. Bob Paisley said Souness was the finest midfielder he had ever managed — and Paisley had managed Dalglish, Keegan, and McDermott.
Three European Cups
Souness played in Liverpool (ENG)'s European Cup wins of 1978, 1981, and 1984 — one of only a handful of players to have won three European Cups. In 1984, he captained Liverpool (ENG) in the final against Roma in Rome (ITA) — Liverpool (ENG)'s own city — where the match went to penalties. Souness converted the penalty that put Liverpool (ENG) 4-2 up. Liverpool (ENG) won. He lifted the trophy in the city of Liverpool (ENG)'s opponents.
Rangers
Souness became player-manager of Rangers in 1986 — transforming a club that had not won the league since 1978 into Scotland's dominant force. He signed the first Catholic player at Rangers in modern times (Mo Johnston), won three league titles as player-manager, and established the "Nine in a Row" squad that Advocaat and Smith completed. His Rangers tenure is considered the most transformative management appointment in Scottish football history.
