About Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bastian Schweinsteiger is Germany's most decorated footballer of his generation — a player who evolved from a flashy winger into one of Europe's most complete central midfielders. He won the 2014 World Cup as a leader of Germany's squad, playing through injury in the final to secure the trophy, and won eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich (GER). His bloodied, bandaged face in the World Cup final became one of the tournament's defining images.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's story

Kolbermoor to Munich

Schweinsteiger was born in Kolbermoor in Upper Bavaria and joined Bayern Munich (GER)'s academy at 14. He made his Bundesliga debut at 18. Initially used as a winger, he gradually moved into central midfield — where his intelligence, physicality, and leadership made him the most important player in Germany's 2014 World Cup winning squad.

The 2014 World Cup Final

In the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, Schweinsteiger was elbowed in the face by Ángel Di María and required bandaging. He played the rest of extra time with a blood-soaked bandage on his cheek — and then, in injury time, conceded a penalty that was missed by Messi. Germany won 1-0 in extra time. The image of his bandaged, bloodied face holding the trophy became iconic.

Chicago and Retirement

After leaving Manchester United in 2017, Schweinsteiger joined Chicago Fire — where he became one of MLS's most celebrated arrivals and helped expand German-American football culture. He retired in 2019 and became a prominent TV pundit.
