About Michael Ballack
Michael Ballack is Germany's greatest midfielder of the modern era and perhaps the finest player never to win a major international trophy. Three times Bundesliga champion, German Footballer of the Year four times, Chelsea's captain in their first major European success — yet he missed the 2002 World Cup final through suspension, lost the Euro 2008 final, and finished runner-up at three separate major tournaments.
Michael Ballack's story
East German Beginnings
Ballack was born in Görlitz in the former East Germany and grew up in the mining town of Chemnitz. He came through Karl-Marx-Stadt's academy before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, where he developed into one of Europe's most complete midfielders. In 2001–02, Leverkusen (GER) finished second in the Bundesliga, the Champions League, and the DFB Cup — the most painful near-miss in German club history.
The Runner-Up
Ballack's career is defined by near-misses. He was booked in the 2002 World Cup semi-final, meaning he missed the final — which Germany lost. He lost the Euro 2008 final. He lost the Champions League final with Bayer Leverkusen in 2002. This pattern of excellence without ultimate glory makes him one of football's great tragic figures.
Chelsea and Legacy
He joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 2006 and became one of their most effective players, winning the League, FA Cup, and reaching the Champions League final. An ankle injury sustained in an FA Cup final challenge ended his international career prematurely before the 2010 World Cup, costing Germany badly.
