About Bryan Mbeumo
Bryan Mbeumo is the Cameroon forward Manchester United paid Brentford a reported £71m for in July 2025, a left-footed right winger from rural Burgundy who chose his father's country over France and became Brentford's club-record signing, top scorer and then their most expensive sale. He won his first Premier League Player of the Month award in October 2025.
Bryan Mbeumo's story
Avallon, Burgundy
Born on 7 August 1999 in Avallon, a small town in rural Burgundy, he played for CO Avallonais from the age of six and former team-mates trace his discipline straight back to home. Troyes took him into their academy at 14, and he scored 14 goals in 33 games for the reserves while waiting for his chance.
'Le Boudeur'
At Troyes the youth-team nickname was 'le boudeur', the sulker: miss a touch and he would brood on it. Franck Ellé saw it as rigour, 'mentally, he conditioned himself', and reserve-team players remember him staying behind to practise free kicks. He won the 2018 Coupe Gambardella, made his Ligue 1 debut against Metz on 17 February 2018, and scored 12 goals in 46 games before leaving at 19.
Brentford's Record Buy
Brentford paid a club-record £5.8m on 5 August 2019, a move some in France questioned. He helped win promotion through the 2021 Championship play-off final, then spent four Premier League seasons alongside and after Ivan Toney, finishing with 70 goals in 242 games. Six years at the club, he says, were 'really, really important' to him as a player and as a person.
Choosing Cameroon
He won ten caps for France at under-17, under-20 and under-21 level, but a meeting with Samuel Eto'o in August 2022 settled his international future. He made his Cameroon debut that September and played all three games at the 2022 World Cup. In November 2025 a late goal in the play-off against DR Congo put Cameroon out of the 2026 World Cup. At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations they reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to the eventual champions Morocco on 9 January 2026.
Old Trafford
Manchester United signed him on 21 July 2025 for a reported £65m plus £6m in add-ons, a five-year contract with an option for a sixth and the number 19 shirt. He scored the opener in a 2-1 win at Liverpool, twice against Brighton and the opener against Manchester City, finishing his first season with 12 goals in 34 games and the October 2025 Premier League Player of the Month award. He has said he wore the United shirt as a boy.
The Professional
Since moving north he has invested in keeping his body right, and he treats the game as something to study away from the pitch as much as on it. Youth coach Benjamin Bureau, who told him early in his Brentford days that he hoped he would one day play for a big Premier League club, got his wish.
