About Cesc Fàbregas

Cesc Fàbregas is one of the finest playmakers of his generation — a creator whose through-ball accuracy was the best of any midfielder in the Premier League's first two decades. He left Barcelona (ESP)'s La Masia at 16 to join Arsenal, captaining the club at 21. He won three trophies with Barcelona (ESP), the Premier League with Chelsea, the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain.

Cesc Fàbregas's story

La Masia's Loss, Arsenal's Gain

Fàbregas joined Barcelona (ESP)'s La Masia academy at eight — his youth career was alongside Messi and Piqué. Arsenal signed him in 2003 aged 16, beating Barcelona (ESP) in a dispute that would take years to legally resolve. He made his Arsenal debut at 16 years and 177 days — the club's youngest competitive goalscorer at the time.

Arsenal's Captain

Fàbregas captained Arsenal from 2008 to 2011 — leading the club through a period of youth football that Arsène Wenger called the most exciting of his tenure, despite no trophies. His passing — particularly his through-balls, which teammates described as arriving "already weighted, already placed" — was considered the most technically precise in the Premier League.

Spain's Substitute Who Won the World Cup

At the 2010 World Cup, Fàbregas was largely used as a substitute. But in extra time of the final against Netherlands, he received the ball and played a through-ball to Andrés Iniesta — who scored the winning goal. The assist for the goal that won the World Cup came from Cesc Fàbregas.
