About Dennis Bergkamp
Dennis Bergkamp is football's great artist. Known as "The Iceman" for his composure and "The Non-Flying Dutchman" for his fear of flying, he transformed Arsenal from plodding English grafters into silky continental aesthetes. His goal against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup — a first touch and finish in one flawless movement — is often cited as the greatest goal ever scored.
Dennis Bergkamp's story
Amsterdam's Perfectionist
Bergkamp was born in Amsterdam (NED) and became absorbed by football as a child, idolising Johan Cruyff. He made his Ajax debut at 17 and formed a devastating partnership with Marc Overmars. His refusal to fly — a phobia that developed following a bomb scare on a 1994 flight — meant he missed many European away games throughout his career.
Saving Arsenal's Soul
At Arsenal, Bergkamp was the catalyst for a revolution. Arsène Wenger built the team around him, and the partnership between Bergkamp's creativity and Henry's pace was the most devastating in Premier League history. The Invincibles of 2003–04 went unbeaten in 49 league games — Bergkamp's vision made them possible.
The Greatest Goal
In the 1998 World Cup quarter-final vs Argentina, with 89 minutes gone, Bergkamp received a 60-yard pass, controlled it with one touch to spin his defender, then slid it into the corner — all in less than a second. Dutch TV ran the clip with Handel's Messiah. It is widely voted the greatest individual goal in World Cup history.
