About Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie is one of football's great late-developers — a player who spent years at Arsenal being brilliant but often injured, then had a single season of 30 league goals and the Golden Boot that won him a £24m move to Manchester United. He immediately won the Premier League in his first United season, scoring a hat-trick against Southampton (ENG) that included a volley from 15 yards that many consider the finest goal in Premier League history.
Robin van Persie's story
Rotterdam's Left Foot
Van Persie was born in Rotterdam (NED) and joined Feyenoord's academy. Arsenal signed him in 2004 as a versatile wide forward — but injuries limited him across eight seasons. He became a centre-forward under Arsène Wenger's later management and scored 30 league goals in 2011-12 — winning the Golden Boot, then rejecting Arsenal's new contract for Manchester United.
The Southampton Volley
In Van Persie's first season at United, he scored a hat-trick against Southampton (ENG) — the first goal a 49th-minute volley where Wayne Rooney's lofted pass from the right was met by Van Persie's left foot on the half-turn. The ball flew into the top corner from 15 yards. Ferguson immediately ran onto the pitch. Alex Ferguson said it was the best goal he had ever seen scored for Manchester United.
Netherlands' Record
Van Persie scored 50 international goals in 102 appearances for the Netherlands — the national record, surpassing Patrick Kluivert. His defining international moment was a diving header against Spain at the 2014 World Cup — meeting Daley Blind's cross and diving horizontally to head the ball past Casillas from outside the six-yard box. It has been voted the finest goal of the 2014 World Cup.
