About Claudio Caniggia
Claudio Caniggia — "Angel Face" — is the most naturally gifted Argentine striker of the 1990s and one of football's great almost-stories: a player who should have won the World Cup but was suspended for the 1994 final, and whose career was repeatedly disrupted by suspension and personal issues. He was the perfect strike partner for Maradona — explosive pace that stretched defences, clinical finishing, the header that eliminated Brazil at Italia 90.
Claudio Caniggia's story
Angel Face
Caniggia's appearance — long blond hair, angular features — earned him the nickname "Angel Face" in Italy, where he played the peak years of his career. Behind the aesthetic was a striker of devastating pace: he was consistently measured as one of the fastest players in world football, covering the first 30 metres in a time that few defenders of his era could match.
The Brazil Goal
Italia 90, Round of 16. Argentina vs Brazil. Buenos Aires (ARG) locked up watching their derby. Caniggia received Maradona's through ball and headed it past Taffarel in the 80th minute — the only goal of the match. It eliminated Brazil from the World Cup. In Argentina, the goal is replayed as often as the 1986 final. In Brazil, it is the most painful single moment in football history. One goal; two countries; fifty years of memory.
Suspended in 1994
At USA 1994, Caniggia was suspended for Argentina's World Cup final against Brazil after accumulating yellow cards across the tournament. Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the final. Caniggia watched from the stands. He has described it as "the worst moment of my life." It is the most celebrated case of a player being absent from his own team's World Cup final through suspension.

- 🌟 Diego Maradona said: "Caniggia was my perfect partner. He ran, he scored, he opened space. When defenders followed him, I was free. When they followed me, he scored. That is football mathematics."
- 🏟️ He played for Dundee and Rangers in Scotland in his late career — one of the most celebrated South Americans to play in the Scottish Premier League, arriving at 34 and still showing glimpses of extraordinary ability.
- 📊 He scored 16 goals in just 50 international appearances — a rate that would have been much higher in a career undisrupted by suspensions, personal issues, and the 13-month FIFA ban he received in 1993.
- 🤝 His partnership with Gabriel Batistuta for Argentina in the mid-1990s — two physically contrasting but devastatingly effective strikers — gave Argentina their finest attacking combination between the Maradona era and Messi's emergence.
