About Sergio Agüero
Sergio Agüero is Manchester City's greatest ever player and the scorer of the most dramatic goal in Premier League history — "Agüeroooo" — a 93:20 winner against QPR on the final day of the 2011-12 season that won City the title. He scored 260 goals for City across 10 seasons — the all-time club record — and is Argentina's second-highest international scorer. He retired in December 2021 aged 33 after being diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia.
Sergio Agüero's story
Buenos Aires to Bernabéu
Agüero grew up in Quilmes, Buenos Aires (ARG), and joined Independiente at 9. He made his professional debut at 15 years and 35 days — the youngest player in Argentine football at that time. He married Diego Maradona's daughter Giannina in 2009 — making Maradona his father-in-law.
Agüeroooo
On 13 May 2012, the final day of the Premier League season, Manchester City needed a win against QPR to win the title on goal difference ahead of United. They were losing 2-1 with seconds remaining. Substitute Edin Džeko equalised. Then, in the 93rd minute and 20 seconds, Agüero received the ball, turned, and shot — a low drive that the goalkeeper couldn't reach. Goal. Title. The commentary — "Agüeroooo!" by Martin Tyler — became the most celebrated in English football. City had won their first title in 44 years.
The Heart Condition
Agüero joined Barcelona (ESP) in summer 2021. After five games, he felt chest discomfort during a match and was substituted. Tests revealed a cardiac arrhythmia — an irregular heartbeat that cardiologists advised could not be safely managed alongside elite sport. He announced his retirement in December 2021, aged 33, crying at a press conference in Barcelona (ESP). His Barcelona (ESP) teammates and former City teammates filled the room.
