About John Stones
John Stones is one of the most technically gifted defenders in English football history. Under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City he evolved into a complete ball-playing centre-back capable of stepping into midfield and dictating play. Six Premier League titles and a Champions League define a career that was initially questioned but ultimately justified at the very highest level.
John Stones's story
From Barnsley to the Pinnacle
Stones came through Barnsley's academy and joined Everton where his comfort on the ball first drew attention — and controversy. Pep Guardiola made him his number one defensive target in 2016, paying £47.5m. The early years at City were inconsistent but Guardiola's trust was ultimately rewarded. Stones became the prototype Guardiola centre-back: a defender who can play out of the back, press high and read the game with the intelligence of a midfielder.
City's Linchpin
His injury record has been a frustration — recurring muscular problems cost him significant time in multiple seasons. But when fit, few defenders in the world can match his technical ability on the ball. By 2026 he was still England's first-choice centre-back, his experience and composure as vital as ever.
A Decade at City Ends, a New Chapter in Milan
Stones's Manchester City contract expired at the end of the 2025-26 season after ten years, six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a Champions League. He featured for England at the 2026 World Cup as they finished third, then signed a two-year deal with Serie A champions Inter Milan on a free transfer in July 2026, beating interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Juventus.
Family Life Away From the Pitch
Off the pitch, Stones married beautician-turned-entrepreneur Olivia Naylor in Ibiza in 2025; she runs a Cheshire beauty academy and a children's clothing brand, Moosh. The pair met in 2019 and settled in Cheshire during his City years, and are now adjusting to life in Milan with their blended family.
