About Gary Mabbutt MBE
Gary Mabbutt MBE spent sixteen seasons at Tottenham Hotspur after arriving from Bristol Rovers as a young professional, going on to captain the side and become one of the most respected figures in its history. He did it all while managing Type 1 diabetes, diagnosed when he was 17, and has spent his retirement as one of the game's leading advocates for the condition.
Gary Mabbutt MBE's story
Gary Mabbutt MBE — Club Legend
Gary Mabbutt made his name across sixteen seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, building his career there, and later his post-playing advocacy work, around proving that a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis at 17 was never going to be a limit.
Scoring at Both Ends
Seven years into his Tottenham career, Mabbutt had the strangest of afternoons in the 1987 FA Cup final against Coventry City: he scored to put Spurs 2-1 up, only for Coventry to equalise and then win 3-2 in extra time after a cross deflected in off his knee for an own goal. The mishap made him an unlikely folk hero at Coventry, where a fanzine was later named after the incident.
Diabetes, Injuries and Resilience
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 17, before he'd played a senior game, Mabbutt managed the condition through sixteen top-flight seasons and later demonstrated an insulin injection into an orange on Blue Peter. He also became the first player to wear a protective face mask in English football, after fracturing his skull and eye socket in a 1993 collision, returning to the pitch rather than calling it a day.
A Voice for Diabetes Awareness
Told by three specialists that his diagnosis would end his career before it began, Mabbutt found a London specialist willing to work with him instead, and has spent his post-playing life turning that experience into advocacy: Honorary Vice President of Diabetes UK, a regular voice during World Diabetes Day, and an outspoken campaigner for early diagnosis after his own 2013 surgery to save his leg from diabetes-related complications.
