About Paul Gascoigne
Paul Gascoigne is the most naturally gifted English footballer since George Best — a player of extraordinary technical ability who was hampered throughout his career by injuries, personal demons, and an inability to harness his own talent consistently. His tears at the 1990 World Cup after a booking that meant he would miss the final became one of football's most indelible images.
Paul Gascoigne's story
Gateshead's Genius
Gascoigne grew up in Gateshead in a working-class family scarred by tragedy — a close friend was killed in a road accident when Gazza was 11, leaving a psychological wound that never fully healed. He joined Newcastle United's academy and moved to Tottenham in 1988, where he became the most exciting player in England within a single season.
Italia 90 and the Tears
The 1990 World Cup in Italy was Gascoigne's finest hour. He drove England to the semi-finals with performances of raw, joyful genius. Then, in the semi-final against West Germany, he received a yellow card — which would have meant a suspension for the final. He burst into tears on the pitch. The image of a 23-year-old man weeping in a World Cup semi-final became one of football's most iconic moments.
The Long Battle
Throughout his career, Gascoigne battled alcoholism, bulimia, and bipolar disorder — often publicly and painfully. He never received the sustained success his talent deserved. He retired in 2004 and has struggled with addiction and mental health issues since. He has been supported by former teammates, charities, and the public through multiple crises.
