About Gianluca Vialli
Gianluca Vialli is one of Italy's finest centre-forwards — a player who won the European Cup with Sampdoria, the Champions League with Juventus, the FA Cup and League Cup with Chelsea as player-manager, and represented Italy at three major tournaments. He was the first player to win the European Cup with two different clubs. He later managed Chelsea to domestic success before a long illness. He died in January 2023.
Gianluca Vialli's story
Sampdoria's Son
Vialli spent the most formative decade of his career at Sampdoria (1984-1992) — winning the Serie A title in 1991 and reaching the European Cup final in 1992, losing 1-0 to Barcelona (ESP) in extra time. His partnership with Roberto Mancini at Sampdoria — Vialli the physical, direct goal-scorer; Mancini the creative orchestrator — is considered the finest in Sampdoria's history and one of the most celebrated in Italian club football.
Chelsea Player-Manager
Vialli arrived at Chelsea in 1996 and became player-manager in 1998 — winning the FA Cup, League Cup, and Cup Winners' Cup while occasionally playing himself. He was 34. He retired as a player while managing, finishing his playing career with a goal in the Cup Winners' Cup final. He is one of a tiny number of player-managers to win silverware at a top European club in the modern era.
Roberto and Gianluca
Vialli's partnership with Roberto Mancini at Sampdoria was the most celebrated in Italian football of the 1980s. Vialli scored 141 goals in club football's pre-Opta era at a rate that would rank him among the finest of any generation. His relationship with Mancini — which endured beyond football into close personal friendship — is one of Italian football's most storied bonds.
