About Roberto Bettega
Roberto Bettega — "Bobby Gol" — is one of Juventus's greatest ever players and one of the finest Italian forwards of the 1970s. He spent his entire career at Juventus, winning seven Serie A titles and two Coppa Italias. He was the star of Italy's 1978 World Cup campaign and a player of sufficient quality that several European clubs offered large fees — all rejected. He later became Juventus's vice-president.
Roberto Bettega's story
Turin's Bobby Gol
Bettega was born in Turin (ITA) and joined Juventus as a teenager, spending his entire playing career at the club. His nickname "Bobby Gol" reflected his goalscoring consistency and his popularity with Juve's international fanbase — a footballer of genuine elegance in an era of more physical Italian strikers.
The 1978 World Cup
Italy's 1978 World Cup in Argentina was Bettega's greatest international stage — he scored four goals as Italy reached 4th place. His goal against France — a curling effort from the left — is still cited as one of the finest scored by an Italian in World Cup history.
One-Club Loyalty
Bettega rejected moves to several European clubs during his peak years — preferring to remain at Juventus throughout his career. After retiring in 1983, he worked in Juventus's management structure for over two decades, eventually becoming vice-president — one of the rare players who became as influential off the pitch as he had been on it.
