About John Charles
John Charles — "Il Gigante Buono" (The Gentle Giant) — is the greatest Welsh footballer in history and the most complete player British football has ever produced. He could play centre-forward or centre-back at the highest level — switching between positions game to game for Juventus — and was never booked or sent off in his career. He scored 93 goals in 155 Serie A appearances for Juventus and is still revered in Turin (ITA) 70 years later.
John Charles's story
Swansea's Giant
Charles was born in Swansea (WAL) and signed for Leeds United as a teenager. He made his debut at 17 and within five years had established himself as the finest player in England — playing as both centre-forward and centre-back at the highest level, sometimes switching within the same season for the same club. His combination of power, technical quality, and positioning was unique in British football.
Turin's Hero
In 1957, Juventus paid Leeds (ENG) £65,000 for Charles — a British record. He scored 93 goals in 155 Serie A appearances across five seasons, winning three Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia trophies. The Juventus supporters named him "Il Gigante Buono" — The Gentle Giant — because despite his extraordinary physical power, he never deliberately fouled an opponent. He was never booked in his entire career.
The Record that Still Stands
John Charles is still the only player in Juventus history to have top-scored in Serie A while playing in two different positions across the same career. When Pelé was asked his greatest ever eleven players, he included John Charles. When Diego Maradona was asked the same question, he said Charles was the most complete player he had ever heard of — because no one could explain how the same person could be the best centre-back AND the best centre-forward at the same level.

- 🟨 He was never booked or sent off in his entire career — across more than 700 professional appearances — combining extraordinary physical power with a gentleness that earned him the nickname "Il Gigante Buono."
- 👨👩👧👦 Married Peggy, with whom he had five children. He settled back in Yorkshire after a glittering career in Italy and Wales, and died in February 2004.

- 🏴 He was voted Wales Player of the Century — by some distance the greatest Welsh footballer in history, a player whose only limitation was that he was Welsh in an era when Wales qualified for only one World Cup (1958).
- 💰 His £65,000 transfer to Juventus in 1957 was a British record — and the start of Juventus's modern identity as a club willing to pay for British talent to complement Italian technical quality.
- 🇮🇹 Juventus fans still sing his name at the Allianz Stadium more than 60 years after he left — a tribute that reflects how completely he became part of the club's identity during five seasons in Turin.
- 📊 He is the only player in football history to have won the Serie A top scorer award (capocannoniere) while simultaneously being considered the best defender of the same era at the same club — a completely unique athletic profile.
- 😢 He died on February 21, 2004, aged 72. The Italian government declared a day of mourning. Juventus flew the club flag at half-mast. Leeds United held a minute's silence. Three countries grieved one man.
