About Hanna Ljungberg

Hanna Ljungberg was one of the fastest and most direct players in women's football history — the driving force of Umeå IK's era of European dominance alongside Marta, and a key figure in Sweden's run to the 2003 World Cup final.

Hanna Ljungberg's story

Sunne to Superstar

Hanna Ljungberg was born on 8 January 1979 in Sunne, Sweden. She joined Umeå IK and became the cornerstone of one of the finest women's club teams ever assembled. Alongside Marta, she formed a devastating partnership that won UEFA Women's Cups and dominated European football for several seasons in the mid-2000s.

The Umeå Era

Umeå IK under Ljungberg was arguably the greatest women's club side of the 2000s. She was the local Swedish star around whom international talents like Marta, Victoria Sandell Svensson, and others were assembled. Her pace, direct running, and work rate on the right flank were exceptional.

World Cup Finalist

Ljungberg was a key player in Sweden's 2003 Women's World Cup run — the tournament played in the USA after the original host South Korea had to switch due to SARS. Sweden reached the final before losing to Germany. She was one of the standout players of the tournament.

Captain & Legacy

Ljungberg captained Sweden and earned 183 caps across her career. She retired in 2010 and has since been involved in women's football development in Sweden. She is regarded as one of the best Swedish players of all time.
