About Henrik Larsson
Henrik Larsson is the greatest Swedish footballer of his generation — a centre-forward who scored 242 goals for Celtic across seven seasons, and won the 2006 Champions League as a January loan with Barcelona (ESP), providing two assists as a substitute in the final. He scored in virtually every final he appeared in.
Henrik Larsson's story
Paradise
Larsson joined Celtic in 1997 from Feyenoord for £650,000 — a bargain that would become one of Scottish football's greatest transfer stories. In seven seasons at Parkhead, he scored 242 goals in 315 appearances, won four league titles, and became the most beloved player in the club's modern history. When he left for Barcelona (ESP) in 2004 on a free transfer, Celtic fans wept in the streets.
Two Countries, One Ball
Larsson's father, Francisco da Rocha, fled Cape Verde during the drought and famine of the 1960s and arrived by boat in Helsingborg, where he met local woman Eva Larsson. Francisco gave Henrik a football when he was just sixteen months old. His parents separated when he was 12; the family chose to give him his mother's surname, feeling it would make him easier to accept in Sweden. He first visited Cape Verde with his father in January 2008.
The Jansen Effect
Celtic manager Wim Jansen signed Larsson from Feyenoord for £650,000 in 1997 and told him plainly: stay in the box if you want to score goals. From 2000, his strike partnership with Chris Sutton became one of Scottish football's most feared, with Larsson later rating that Celtic pairing above the ones he went on to build with the world-class forwards he lined up alongside at Barcelona.
Beyond the Pitch
Larsson received an honorary degree from the University of Strathclyde in 2005, recognising both his football and his charity work. He has served as a UEFA ambassador for EURO 2020 and regularly returns to Celtic Park for the club's charity fixtures, including 2018's "A Match for Cancer", which raised funds via the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and the Celtic FC Foundation.
