About Helmut Rahn
Helmut Rahn scored two goals in the 1954 World Cup final — including the 84th-minute winner that gave West Germany a 3-2 victory over Hungary in the 'Miracle of Bern'. His second goal — preceded by the most famous line in German radio commentary ('Rahn müsste schießen... Rahn schießt... Tor!') — is the most celebrated individual moment in German football history. He scored 11 goals at the 1954 and 1958 World Cups combined.
Helmut Rahn's story
'Rahn schießt — Tor!'
July 4, 1954. Bern. 84th minute. West Germany 2, Hungary 2. Helmut Rahn received the ball on the edge of the penalty area. Radio commentator Herbert Zimmermann spoke the words that would be replayed for decades: 'Rahn müsste schießen... Rahn schießt... Tor! Tor! Tor!' Rahn had shot. It was a goal. Hungary rushed to find an equaliser. The referee blew the final whistle. West Germany had won the World Cup. The recording of Zimmermann's commentary is the most listened-to piece of German sports audio in history.
The Tournament
Rahn scored 7 goals across the 1954 World Cup — including two in the final against Hungary. He had been one of West Germany's most reliable attacking threats throughout the tournament, scoring in multiple rounds. His combination of pace, power, and a powerful shot with his right foot made him the most dangerous wide attacker in the competition. Only Sándor Kocsis scored more goals (11), and Hungary lost the final.
The Character
Rahn was nicknamed 'The Boss' — a personality as large as his shot. He was known for his drinking, his spontaneity, and a life that became considerably less orderly after his playing career ended. A car accident after retirement left him injured. He spent his final decades in relative obscurity in Essen. He died in 2003. German football journalists have written more about Rahn's post-career than almost any other figure of his era — the contrast between the moment of triumph and the difficulty of what followed.
